October Observances Part 2

October Observances Part 2

I celebrated Filipino American History Month this October watching three films by Marissa Aroy at Delta College – The Recipe; Little Manila, Filipinos In California’s Heartland and The Delano Manongs, Forgotten Heroes Of The United Farm Workers which detailed Larry Itliong’s involvement.  The films were followed by a panel discussion and Q & A with filmmaker Marissa Aroy, Professors James Sobredo and Debra Louie, Johnny Itliong (son of Larry Itliong), moderated by Journalist Emil Guillermo.

During the discussion several points were made – We have to tell our own story and we need to learn from the past or it will be repeated.  My take away is all voices must be heard for the complete picture to emerge.

October Observances Part 1

I thought October was only for celebrating Halloween but the month has many observances including Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Filipino American History Month.

Jen Primous, the founder of P.U.M.P.S. FOR WOMEN, INC. a women’s society whose focus is on women’s empowerment and women’s issues, took the stage at the Domestic Violence Awareness Day held at the Podesto Teen Impact Center on October 11. She introduced the event as more than entertainment or something meant to discourage.

Parents - Beware! From One Teen To You!

Parents - Beware! From One Teen To You!

Parents – Beware….

Depression!  You’ve seen it…heard about it…felt it…yet!  As a parent, you might not understand it through the eyes of your child.

Depression is becoming less visible to those who can help, because of social media allowing the privacy of such thoughts, only shared to other teens.

On social media, whom are the teens reaching out to?

Through trending on social media networks, self-harm is becoming more and more transparent to other teens that are not in a position to help depressed students.

For example, as a young teen, myself, when I go on Instagram, it is shocking how many teens are posting photos which are upsetting and depressing.  Teens are showing in their photos that life is horrible and not worth living.
