San Joaquin County students receive top honors at State Science Fair

Unprecedented in San Joaquin County history, county students excelled at the California State Science Fair by taking first, second, and third place in the junior division. San Joaquin County students have not placed in the State competition since 2006 when a student placed third. Not only did four of six San Joaquin County junior division attendees place, but Tom Hawkins Elementary School Teacher, Cassandra de Wood was honored as California’s Science Teacher of the Year.

The State Science Fair, held in Los Angeles at the California Science Center on May 2 and 3, received 1,000 projects from 403 schools all over California. Seventh grader Julie Fukunaga of Elkhorn Elementary took first place with her project, Weedfinder: An Eco-Friendly Herbicide Sprayer.
