Tracy police rescue child in standoff; Parolee arrested peacefully
News

TRACY, CA - Police have rescued a 15-month-old child believed to have been held hostage by his father, a parolee and known gang member, inside of a home on the 100 block of Clover Road.

Authorities safely removed the child from the home before finding his father hiding in the attic, according to Sgt. Tony Sheneman with the Tracy Police Department. The man, identified as Andrew Stearns, 28, was taken into custody and taken to San Joaquin County Jail for violating parole.

No one was injured in the incident.

Several homes on the street were evacuated as authorities surrounded the home where Stearns was believed to be inside holding his child hostage.

The incident began around 12:20 p.m. Thursday when officers attemped to serve a parole warrant at the residence, according to Sheneman. Stearns took cover in the home with his child, said Sheneman. His wife was able to safely make it out of the house.

Sheneman said Sterns was a known gang member in the city. Tracy police served the warrant in hopes taking Sterns back into custody would help alleviate recent increased gang activity in the area.
