Local mom starts support group for hydrocephalus

Local mom starts support group for hydrocephalus

TRACY - Since Joey Chavez’s diagnosis with hydrocephalus, the 8-year-old has had nine brain surgeries, starting at age 2. The most recent was Dec. 9, when he had a shunt replaced at Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland.

His mother, Kim Ruiz, impressed with her son’s fortitude, has turned their shared experience into motivation to help others with the same condition.

Joey has had three shunts, a procedure in which a doctor skillfully guides a catheter through the brain matter, Ruiz explained, to combat the fluid that builds up inside his brain cavities.

Marrow registry drive in memory of Victoria Martin Feb. 25

Marrow registry drive in memory of Victoria Martin Feb. 25

MANTECA - BloodSource will hold a marrow registry drive on Friday, Feb. 25 at George McParland Elementary, 1601 Northgtate Drive, honoring the memory of Victoria Martin who passed away in May 2010 from lymphoma at 34 years old. The drive will be held from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Martin left behind her husband Jerry, and two children, Gerald and Delicia, and a Manteca community who came together to help one of their own. The community helped grant Martin’s dying wish for a festive church wedding the Martins had never had, though married for 18 years.

Without a bone marrow match in her family for a lifesaving marrow transplant, marrow registry drives were held for Martin with hopes to find a matched donor. However, a marrow match was never found. There is a great need for racial and ethnic diversity on the marrow registry to help patients like Martin.

Martin was a yard supervisor at McParland School in Manteca.
