Early literacy seen as key to success

Several San Joaquin County service groups and nonprofit organizations partnered with the Family Literacy Project this summer to promote the importance of reading in a child’s early development.

The summer workshop series – designed to boost literacy rates in the community during the months that students are out of school – is aimed at families with children up to five years old. The eight events are offered in both English and Spanish and hosted by a local nonprofit agency, faith group or some other community organization throughout San Joaquin County. Workshops took place in cities from Escalon, to Stockton, to Lathrop, and featured a presentation on the importance of early literacy and offered guidance to parents and caregivers on how to help children develop literacy skills.
