Free San Joaquin Co. Fair begins 5-day run

STOCKTON, CA - The San Joaquin County Fair opened Wednesday at noon, with free admission being offered through Sunday.

In past years, it cost a person $9 to get into the fair, but directors are hoping the free admission attracts much larger crowds with the goal of building excitement for next year's fair.

"Most of the money generated for the fair is horse racing.  When we couldn't get two weeks (of racing) and had to reduce to five days, we had to reduce the fair as well.  That's why next year we're moving to September for two weeks of racing and two weeks of fair," said fair board of directors chairman James Jimenez.

The Four Tops are performing Wednesday evening, with Lonestar and Tower of Power also scheduled for the five-day event.
