Free E-Waste recycling events in Tracy

TRACY - The City of Tracy in partnership with San Joaquin County will be hosting a free E-Waste collection event on Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boyd Service Center located at 520 Tracy Boulevard.

This event will give residents and local businesses an opportunity to dispose of their unwanted electronic devices. Additionally, Styrofoam packaging and cardboard waste will also be collected free of charge.

These one-day drop-off events aim to increase public awareness of recycling while decreasing the amount of recyclable toxic waste to our landfills. For example, Styrofoam, technically called expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), can be recycled into a variety of sustainable green building products, including decorative molding and other non-structural wood-alternatives.

The recycling events will be held at the Boyd Service Center, 520 Tracy Boulevard, Gate #1 throughout the year on the following dates:

April 9, 2011 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
July 9, 2011 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
October 8, 2011 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

The following items will be accepted at the free E-Waste Events:

• Electronics (TVs, monitors, computers, printers, VCRs, radios, stereos, cell phones, telephones, answering machines, small countertop microwaves)

• Fluorescent bulbs (limit 20 bulbs per resident/business)

• Household batteries

• Mercury items (mercury thermometers & old thermostats, novelty items)

• Cardboard

• Clean, white (#6) polystyrene block foam packaging

• Holiday lights

There is no limit on the amount of Styrofoam that may be dropped off at these events, but residents and businesses are urged to follow these simple guidelines:

• Bring only Styrofoam that is clean, white, block foam packaging (#6)

• Remove any foreign materials such as tape, stickers, labels, and cardboard

• Contain the Styrofoam in a bag, bundle or box for easy transport

• Make sure the material is actually Styrofoam - look for the #6 recycling symbol

The following items will NOT be accepted:

• Packing peanuts (most mailing service stores will recycle packing peanuts)

• Bubble wrap

• Food or beverage containers

• Major appliances (County Solid Waste Facilities accept these for free)

• Automotive batteries

Individuals with more than 20 electronic devices must call (209) 234-7994 in advance to make arrangements with Onsite Electronics Recycling for bulk collection.
