Holiday Tips from Tracy Police Department

Tracy, Calif. - The Tracy Police Department wants your holiday season to be safe and happy. It is the time of year when we hope for peace, attend parties, and increase our travel. It is also the time of year when busy people can neglect some basic safety precautions that might make your season a bit more enjoyable. Below are some tips for a safer, more secure season for you and your loved ones:

• Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you while you’re out and about.
• Park your vehicle in a well-lighted space.
• Lock your vehicle, take your keys, and DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES in your vehicle. These efforts will minimize your risk of becoming victim of vehicle break-ins.
• Don’t overload yourself with more packages than you can carry. Ask the store personnel for assistance to help you carry your packages to your car.
• Check your vehicle’s back seat and around the car before getting in.
• Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason.
• If you are shopping with small children, make sure that you’re holding their hand while in or around the parking lot.
• If you are separated from your child while shopping; make sure that you have designated meeting place if someone gets lost.

• If you’re traveling for the holidays, ask a neighbor, a friend, or family to watch your home while you are away.
• Set interior and exterior lights on timers.
• Lock your doors and windows, even when you are home, and utilize your home security system.
• Don’t drink and drive.
• Make sure your home is equipped with working smoke detectors—one in every room where sleeping occurs, one in each hallway leading to each sleeping room, and one on each floor in non-sleeping areas.
• If you’re expecting packages this season, request that a “signature is required” so the delivery person won’t leave the package on the porch. If you order a package from a local retailer have them deliver it directly to store for a “in store pick up.”

On behalf of the Tracy Police Department, we hope you enjoy time with your family, friends and neighbors, and have a cheerful holiday season.
