Marrow registry drive in memory of Victoria Martin Feb. 25

MANTECA - BloodSource will hold a marrow registry drive on Friday, Feb. 25 at George McParland Elementary, 1601 Northgtate Drive, honoring the memory of Victoria Martin who passed away in May 2010 from lymphoma at 34 years old. The drive will be held from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Martin left behind her husband Jerry, and two children, Gerald and Delicia, and a Manteca community who came together to help one of their own. The community helped grant Martin’s dying wish for a festive church wedding the Martins had never had, though married for 18 years.

Without a bone marrow match in her family for a lifesaving marrow transplant, marrow registry drives were held for Martin with hopes to find a matched donor. However, a marrow match was never found. There is a great need for racial and ethnic diversity on the marrow registry to help patients like Martin.

Martin was a yard supervisor at McParland School in Manteca. The school held a marrow registry drive during her illness and will host this memorial marrow registry drive.

Joining the registry is easy. If you are between the ages of 18 and 60 years, the process involves paperwork, a simple swab of the inside of the cheek and a good faith commitment to donate marrow if matched to a patient like Martin.
