50th Annual Industrial & Technology BBQ Honors 23 Companies

At least 300 people turned out to celebrate companies including Amazon for its new fulfillment Center in Tracy with more than 1,000 employees, Trinchero Family Estates for a $300 million expansion of its Lodi winery and Delicato Family Vineyards, the Manteca- area winery that has been here for more than 90 years.

Nine companies that been in operation in San Joaquin County for 50 or more years were honored at the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce 50th Annual Industrial & Technology Barbeque last night at the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel in downtown Stockton. Fourteen companies that recently located to or expanded in the county will also be honored. Pacific Gas & Electric Company presented a special "Green Award" to Wilmar Oils & Fats LLC; recognizing the company's recent efforts in energy efficiency through the installation of eight energy efficiency measures to reduce the plants electricity and natural gas consumption.

Former Microsoft executive, Hadi Partovi, is promoting programming as a component of core education, like science and math. He said schools in most states treat computer science as an elective rather than something everyone should learn.

The Buzz Oates Group of Companies demonstrated its faith in San Joaquin County and Stockton's economy this morning with a wall-tilting and celebration of the first speculation building since early 2009. Chief Investment Officer Kevin Ramos said the timing is perfect for the construction of this building and they have already received some inquires through their brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle. The 257,000 square foot, Class-A warehouse distribution facility is in the Stockton Airport Business Center. "We haven't' seen anything like this over the last five years," said Ramos. "We have seen the signs that the economy is coming back and Buzz Oates is making the investment now." Robert Taylor, JLL Executive Vice President, said the signs were evident that it was time to start building. "There is a less than eight percent vacancy rate in San Joaquin County right now for Class A high cube warehouse space like this.

The California Employer Advisory Council (CEAC) along with the Employment Development Department (EDD) annually honors employers who consistently demonstrate positive policies toward U.S. veterans and go the extra mile to hire, retain, and promote them providing training and benefits. Holt of California and Verve Networks along with US Foods, ASCO and Lowes received certificates of recognition from EDD & CEAC for outstanding service in the employment of veterans for the year 2014 at the August 14th Veterans Orientation workshop. Verve Networks participated in The Veterans' Program at the Stockton EDD office in San Joaquin County. Holt of California provided a valuable perspective to the veterans during the Veteran Network (VET NET) workshops.

Facebook "Small Business Boost" packs them in!

More than 500 people filled a large conference room at the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel in Stockton today for a free seminar by Facebook Inc. on best practices for small businesses. The two-hour seminar and networking opportunity was made possible through a special partnership with local business organizations.

Facebook Small Business Team Leader Bess Yount surprised the audience with a few facts: Facebook has 1.3 billion users; 128 million people use Facebook daily; 21%of total mobile time is spent on Facebook; and 38% of online purchases are a result of Facebook "shares". "The world is going digital and you need to be online to reach the people trying to find you," said Yount. She illustrated the strategies small businesses can utilize Facebook to bring people to company pages with key objectives being: building awareness; bringing people into a physical store; and increasing online sales. "You can reach the right audience and turn them into loyal customers."
