An unwrapped toy for the Child Abuse Prevention Council was the admission ticket for the Stockton Chamber's annual "Refreshments with the Recyclers" Holiday luncheon at the Stockton Hilton Wednesday.

It was well worth it not only to help San Joaquin County children, but for the good news about the environmental situation in California. Keynote speaker CalEPA Assistant Secretary Jim Bohon delivered a positive statistical list that elicited several rounds of applause from the audience. Bohon began with the government agency itself. "Twenty-five years ago, there were 1,100 environmental regulatory agencies," said Bohon. "Businesses like you pushed for consolidation and now there are 83 certified agencies." He noted that includes San Joaquin County Environmental Health. Bohon said last year CalRecycle paid out almost one billion to beverage container recycling centers and just over 200 million pounds of electronic waste was processed. In addition, 87% of the enormous number of waste tires (42 million) was diverted to re-use and in the past 10 years, businesses have reduced the amount of waste going to landfills by 38%. Per employee that equals about 10.5 pounds per day - down from 15 pounds.

Bohon complemented the Chamber's Green Team San Joaquin Program, saying it's will soon be used as a model for implementation in Fresno County. He applauded local efforts including the Chamber's Recycling Exposition-Rexpo, REACON, and the local Recycling Market Development Zones.
