Sign up your kids for reader's book club at the library

TRACY - On April 1, 2011 the Mountain House Branch Library will begin accepting sign ups for the Children's Beginning Reader's Book Clubs. The book club meetings will begin on Wednesday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m. and will run weekly until May 18.

Children in grades one through four are invited to sign up for either the Easy Reader or Beginning Chapter Club.

Children will check out a different book each week, read it at home and then gather in groups the following week to discuss the books they have read. Both book clubs feature a snack and an activity or craft. Please sign up in advance at the Mountain House Branch Library information desk.

TRACY - West Coast's most celebrated Rolling Stones Tribute Group bring to the Grand Theatre, for one night only, their newest concert experience stage show.

The colors, costumes and sonic accuracy of this performing ensemble will amaze and astound even the most discriminating Rolling Stones fan.

Formed by Rudy Colombini who embodies Mick, he has created a true phenomenon with Dave Garcia as Keith Richards, Mark Banning as Ron Wood, Craig Manrique as Charlie Watts and Kenny Crampton as Bill Wyman.

This weekend brings modern dance and old-time classics to the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

Children's Dance Theatre shows us the limitless boundaries of dance in Imagination Exploratorium this Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m.

This Sunday, Feb. 27 @ 2:00 p.m. come see the Swing Dolls. This famous trio brings us the music made famous by The Andrews Sisters, The McGuire Sisters and more as they pay tribute to the USO. Tickets are $27 - $37.

Celebrate Tracy's Children citywide event March 8

TRACY - On Tuesday, March 8, an event will be held in honor of the memory of Sandra Cantu on the date of her birth. Cantu was kidnapped and killed by a family acquaintance in Tracy in April 2009.

"Celebrating Tracy's Children" will take begin at 10 a.m. and end around 8 p.m. featuring various activities, participating business specials and events around the city. All of the events are free and open to the public.

Thia Megia heads to Las Vegas on 'American Idol'

MOUNTAIN HOUSE - Thia Megia once again wowed the judges to advance to the next round in Fox’s 2011 “American Idol” on the Thursday, Feb. 17, show.

The 15-year-old Mountain House resident’s rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” had Jennifer Lopez whispering to Steven Tyler, “She’s amazing.”

Megia, a high school student in Tracy, advanced to the round of 100 last week, and now has advanced to the round of 60 in next week’s Hollywood Round 4.

On Wednesday, Feb. 23, the contestants will sing to Beatles music in Las Vegas.

And on Thursday, Feb. 24, Megia will vie for a spot in the top 24 and a place in the semifinals.

Megia broke new ground by being one of the first 15-year-old singers allowed to compete since an age reduction went into effect for the 10th season of the hit show. The prior minimum age was 16.

Manteca library to hold '1,2,3 Draw' event March 16

MANTECA - On Wednesday, March 16 at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., the Manteca Branch Library will host 1, 2, 3, Draw, a program for children on how to draw fun things by utilizing basic shapes, colors and age-appropriate techniques.

The 11 a.m. event is for 4-6 year olds and the 4 p.m. program is for older children. Sign-ups are available at the library's information desk. The event if free and open to the public.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre on Valentine's Day

TRACY - Still looking for somewhere to take your sweetie on Valentine's Day? Why not enjoy a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre show Feb. 14 at the E Gallery and Performance Annex, 729 Central Avenue. The gallery opens at 7:30 p.m., dinner starts at 8:15 p.m. and the show and dessert begin at 8:30 p.m.

Jack Elliott Productions presents "Murder in Poker City - Cupid's Revenge," that takes places in the heydey of the Prohibition era in 1929. There is a love triangle, bootlegging, gambling and murder -- and everyone is a suspect. Go back in time and join the characters for the evening, and decide for yourself "whodunit."
