For eight years Disneynature has created films released for Earth Day.  Seeing these films has become a favorite tradition for my husband and I.  This year’s movie opens on Friday, April 17 and is called Monkey Kingdom.  Part of the proceeds from attending opening week goes to protecting monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitats.  Watching Monkey Kingdom this week is something simple and enjoyable you can do while helping our endangered friends.

Stockton’s most well known festival, the Asparagus Festival, returns this weekend.  The festival has changed its name to the San Joaquin Asparagus Festival and is now being held at the San Joaquin County fairgrounds.  With this venue comes more of an emphasis on agriculture.  The fairground location also offers more carnival rides and games as well as all the old favorites – deep fried asparagus, chef demos, art, a community stage and more.  For details link here.

Celebrate John Muir’s birthday on April 21 at the DeRosa University Center (UOP) from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.  Take a photo with John Muir, eat Scottish Dundee cakes and discover what Muiring activities students, faculty and staff have taken part in.  Have a favorite photo of you enjoying the outdoors that you would like to share? Send photos to SustainingPacific@pacific.edu

The 5th annual Green Fashion Show takes place on April 24 from 8 pm – 10 pm in the Long Theatre (UOP).  Fashions are made from sustainable materials - organic/local textiles, plants, upcycled thrift store finds, recyclables etc. This is a fun evening of innovation and creativity.  What will you discover?

Earth Day is Sunday, April 26 at Victory Park from 10 am – 4 pm.  This year the theme is “Bee Aware” of the importance of bees in food and plant production.  As always there are lots of info booths and entertainment.
