Art Break Day
Art Break Day

Last year I discovered Art Break Day, a day where people gather throughout the world to make art for free. The Art Break Day message “art is an essential part of a healthy community and everyone deserves access to it” resonated with me so I contacted the founders of the non-profit Art Is Moving, that conceived Art Break Day in 2011, to register Victory Park as an Art Break Day site.

A wide variety of people came to the first Art Break Day in Stockton, about 100 in all - couples, singles, parents with children, seniors, developmentally disabled, friends, skilled artists and those just wanting to have fun.  What touched me was how grateful everyone was for the opportunity to gather and make art.

Art Break Day returns to Stockton this Friday, September 5 from 9 am – 5 pm at the Janet Leigh Plaza by the downtown Cineplex, 222 N El Dorado.  The theme for this year is “I Wish.”  I have invited the Cleveland School Remembers Draw It Out wish flag project to be part of Art Break Day to tie into the “I Wish” theme.

There will be three tents of artmaking supplies for the public to use – a tent where participants can make a wish flag sharing wishes for what would make neighborhoods better and two tents with painting and drawing supplies to create works on paper.  Draw It Out asks that wish flags be left behind to be added to the wish flag collection for display in Stockton.  Other art pieces made may be taken home or left to be given away. Bring a friend and spend part of Friday making art at Art Break Day Stockton at Janet Leigh Plaza.
